Statewide program seeks to increase African American enrollment

Now in its fourth year, Super Sunday, a statewide college recruiting event aimed at African American students and families continues to grow.  The 2014 Super Sunday, set for February 23, will involve about 44 churches across Kentucky and several thousand participants.

Jefferson Community and Technical College will partner with First Gethsemane Baptist in Louisville and St. Stephen’s three locations in Louisville, Indiana and Elizabethtown. Super Sunday  will feature representatives from Jefferson Community & Technical College, the University of Louisville ULtra transfer program, Simmons College and KHEAA, which will have information on financial aid.

Super Sunday was launched by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System in 2011 to promote higher education and to make it easier for students and their families to have access to information.

“Super Sunday strives to bring college information and resources to church congregations, where there is already an established support system,” said Dr. Tony Newberry, president of Jefferson Community and Technical College. “With the support of families, friends, pastors and the church congregation, we can enhance a college going culture.”

Visitors are invited to attend church services, but they also may attend only the college fair. You do not have to be a member of the churches to participate.

This year’s Super Sunday Hall of Fame recipient is Verna Dorsey, a teacher at Smyrna Elementary in Louisville. Dorsey married at a young age and as a result did not attend high school. She enrolled at Jefferson in 1988 and then transferred to Spalding, where she graduated with an Education major in 2000. After taking a job at Portland Elementary School she enrolled at Indiana Wesleyan College in and earned her Master’s Degree in Education.

“Obstacles can be overcome in pursuit of a dream,” said Dorsey. “As I look back over my journey, I thank God for my accomplishments. I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had given up. I want to encourage anyone who thinks that they can’t do something to try God, because with Him you can do all things.”
