Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month

• President Bill Clinton declared June as national lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender(LGBT) month on June 2, 2000.
  • Pride month has helped many people take a positive stance aganist discrimination and violence toward gays and lesbian.
• 1906 the book IMRE was written by Edward Stevenson, which was the first openly gay American novel ever published.
• In 1910 Emma Goldman was the first American woman to stand up for homosexuality.   
• Each year Kentucky has its gay and lesbian pride parade, which is a lively two day event with music and food.
  • This year the parade will be held on June 15 and 16 at the Louisville Water Front Park.

  • Black Music Month
    • The celebration of the talents and creativity of African American singers, musicians, and composers.
  • National Caribbean American Heritage Month
    • This celebrates the significance of the Caribbean people and their descendants in the history of the US.
• June 12:
  • Anniversary Of Loving VS. Virginia Decision
    • Celebrates the 1967 decision by the US Supreme Court that stuck down the miscegenation laws remaining in 16 states barring interracial marriage.
    • This decision gave the people in the United States the freedom to marry outside their race.
    • This holiday is also known as loving day.
• June 17:
  • Father’s Day
    • The day to honor all fathers, which begin in 1910 when Louise Dodd of Spokane, Washington, suggested to her minister that a day be set aside.
    • Once the interest grew about this holiday in 1966 a presidential proclamation established father’s day as the third Sunday in June.
• June 21:
  • National Aboriginal Day (Canada)
    • A day to recognize the diverse cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people, collectively known as Aboriginal peoples in Canada.
• June 23:
  • Tuen Ng Djunrangon Boat Festival (China)
    • Honors China’s first major poet, Ch’u Yuan Honors, who drowned himself in 278 CE in protest of injustice and corruption.
