Visitors and Community

Jefferson Community & Technical College is a comprehensive institution of higher education, based in Louisville, KY., and the largest of 16 colleges forming the Kentucky Community & Technical College System.

With six campuses in three counties and an extensive eLearning program, Jefferson enrolls more than 15,000 students in associate degree, diploma and/or certificate programs and offers 70+ majors . Students prepare for specific careers or complete a transfer degree that allows them to earn the first two years of a baccalaureate degree.

Jefferson has enjoyed continuous enrollment growth, increasing 10.7 percent in 10 years; it enrolled 15,529 students in the Fall 2010. The college had a record enrollment for Spring 2011 at 14,063. As the second largest college in Louisville, Jefferson is the college of choice for most students in the region who choose to attend college in Kentucky.

The college also has seen explosive growth in credentials awarded, 561 percent in 10 years, including a 139.4 percent increase in associate degrees. A record total 3,280 credentials were awarded in the 2009-10 academic year.

Partnerships

The college enjoys numerous public and private partnerships, including the nationally recognized Metropolitan College, with UPS.  Students enrolled in the Metropolitan College program, work for UPS’s Next Day Air operation at UPS Worldport and receive reimbursement for tuition and books. The program has opened access to college to thousands of students and positively impacts college retention and UPS turn-over rates.

Jefferson also has partnerships with Norton Healthcare and Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Healthcare, who support the college’s allied health and nursing programs.  It also works closely with Jefferson County Public Schools Adult Education Program to provide the nationally recognized “Education Enrichment Services” program, which eases the transition of students from adult education into college-level programs. The college also provides adult education in Bullitt, Carroll, Trimble, and Shelby counties in Kentucky in partnership with Kentucky Adult Education.

Jefferson works closely with Greater Louisville Inc., the chamber of commerce; the Higher Incomes Require Education (HIRE) consortium; and KentuckianaWorks, the workforce investment board. The college also is a key partner in the community’s new 55,000 Degrees initiative, whose goal is to increase the number of area residents with college degrees by 55,000 by 2020.

The college also was named in 2011 to the new cohort of Achieving the Dream, a highly selective and competitive program, which helps community colleges improve student success through data-driven, innovative programs.  Only 160 colleges out of nearly 1,200 in the United States are Achieving the Dream colleges.

Workforce Solutions

In addition to traditional on-campus college programs, the college also works directly with business and industry to provide customized education and training programs to employees. In 2010-11, the Jefferson’s Workforce Solutions division served 990 companies and 2,400 employees with customized programs, including Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and wide range of leadership, testing, and hands-on training programs.

JCTC will return to First Gethsemane, which has declared February Education Month, and add Bates Memorial Baptist Church to the partnership.  At each event, college representatives will be on hand to answer general questions about attending college and offer information about programs.
