A record 1,700 students form 2006 graduating class
LOUISVILLE (May 17, 2006) -- The continued growth of Jefferson Community & Technical College will defined sharply this year as about 1,700 graduates are awarded nearly 2,600 credentials. In 2005, the college awarded 1,900 credentials to just over 1,200 graduates.

Those achievements will be celebrated during the college’s commencement ceremony at 6:30 p.m. May 17, 2006, in Hall 2C at the Kentucky International Convention Center. It will be the first commencement ceremony for Jefferson Community & Technical College, which formed July 1, 2005, with the consolidation of Jefferson Community College and Jefferson Technical College, although the colleges held a joint ceremony for the previous four years.

Prestigious Jack Kent Cooke scholarship goes to Jefferson student
LOUISVILLE (May 1, 2006) -- Jessica Dawkins of Louisville acknowledges that she’s come a long way from her youth on an isolated hog farm, when thoughts of college barely existed. Today the 28-year-old is preparing to graduate from Jefferson Community & Technical College’s honors program with a 4.0 GPA and one of the most prestigious scholarships that can be awarded to a community college student.

Dawkins, who plans to transfer to the University of Louisville and eventually to earn a doctorate in history, was one of only 38 students from around the globe to earn the highly competitive Undergraduate Transfer Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship, which allows community college students to complete their four-year degrees. The amount and duration of the scholarships vary by student based on the cost of attendance or grants received, but the awards can total up to $30,000 per year for each student.

For many students just the thought of math class makes them worry. Will I understand it? Can I pass the class? Why do I need math anyway?  But of course, math is an integral part of everyday life and a critical skill in many of the professions Jefferson students will enter. So the college has embarked on a five-year process to change the way students think about math and the way some math classes are taught. It is a program known as Jefferson Counts and it is JCTC’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
