LOUISVILLE (March 27, 2006) -- The sounds of saws, keyboards, welding torches, and other tools of every size and shape will fill the air April 13-15 as students from across the state pit their skills against each other in the annual Kentucky-Skills USA competition.

More than 900 high school and post-secondary students will participate in 95 skills and leadership events, including competitions in such diverse areas as plumbing, welding, wiring, public speaking, cosmetology, aviation maintenance, graphic design, health occupations, electronics and computer networking. $100,000 donation to provide textbooks for students in need
National City gift establishes endowment account

LOUISVILLE (March 8, 2006) -- For some students, the high cost of textbooks can be a nearly insurmountable barrier to attending college. Thanks to a commitment from National City Bank of Kentucky, however, students at Jefferson Community & Technical College soon will be able to apply for scholarships that cover the cost of textbooks.

The $100,000 donation, to be paid at $20,000 over five years, will fund the National City Endowed Textbook Scholarship Fund at the two-year college, where the average student is 26 years old and balances work and family

Culinary Arts to hold grand opening for new kitchen/lab
LOUISVILLE (FEB 21, 2006)-- Ten Viking ranges stand side-by-side down the center of the large kitchen, while students in white coats and tall hats grill, sauté, boil and fry their way through a second-year Culinary Arts lab. This semester, the students have the benefit of working in a new, state-of-the-art lab, completed mid-way through the Fall term.

Jefferson Community & Technical College, which enrolls more than 50 Culinary Arts students in lab courses each semester, will officially unveil its new lab on Tuesday, Feb 21, with a reception and cooking demonstrations.

For many students just the thought of math class makes them worry. Will I understand it? Can I pass the class? Why do I need math anyway?  But of course, math is an integral part of everyday life and a critical skill in many of the professions Jefferson students will enter. So the college has embarked on a five-year process to change the way students think about math and the way some math classes are taught. It is a program known as Jefferson Counts and it is JCTC’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
