ESL Admissions Process

  1. Complete the JCTC Application for Admission.
    • The application is online and is free. Please go to www.jefferson.kctcs.edu/application to apply online
    • All first time college students should submit a high school transcript (from any country) or GED score report. It is ok to submit your transcript or diploma in any language
    • Students who have also attended university in the past must submit university transcripts.  Transcripts from colleges and universities outside the U.S. must be sent to an international transcript evaluation company first.  You may use any company on the website http://naces.org/members.htm.  Please see each company’s website for details on what to submit.  The company will create an evaluation of your courses and make a report telling us what your past classes are equal to in the U.S. education system.  This report is required for all transfer students.
  2. Apply for financial aid.  (optional)
    • U.S. citizens, permanent residents, refugees, parolees, asylees, and Cuban-Haitian entrants are eligible to apply for federal financial aid.  Apply on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  You can also contact the International Admissions Office for information on where to go if you need help completing your financial aid application.  Allow 6 to 8 weeks for processing, although sometimes it does take more time. Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid as early as possible.
  3. Take the ESL COMPASS test.
    • All new students take this placement test before registering for classes. The test will include writing, reading, grammar and listening.  Students should make an appointment for the COMPASS test online from the Placement Test web page.  You can learn more about the ESL Compass Test and see sample questions at: http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html
  4. Attend an ESL Orientation meeting
    • ESL Orientation is a meeting for new students where you are given more detailed information about the college. At orientation, you will receive information about the ESL classes, all programs of study, financial aid, student services and campus information.
  5. Advising and Registration
    • All ESL students meet with ESL advisors who can counsel students on which classes to attend. The advisor will help you choose your classes and plan your schedule.  Advising and registration days will be announced at orientation.
  6. Pay tuition fees by deadline date
    • Tuition and fees are usually due by the first day of class.  Tuition costs can be found on the Cost and Financial Aid section of our website.
