Deaf and Hard of Hearing Student Services

Purpose:

To ensure equal and equitable access to Jefferson Community and Technical College sponsored programs and activities for Jefferson Community and Technical College students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Academic Support - Laying the Foundations of Success

Interpreting Services-Available upon Request:

Our interpreters provide communication access for our students whose primary mode of communication is American Sign Language or a variation of a sign communication system.

  • All our interpreters are licensed by the Kentucky Board of Interpreters and are certified by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD).
  • Over 90% of our interpreters are graduates of an Interpreter Training Program (ITP); many of our interpreters hold dual academic degrees.
  • Attention is given to match a student’s communication modalities with an interpreter’s skill sets and subject mastery.
  • Interpreting services for enrolled students are provided for all college sanctioned events.
  • We support the profession of interpreting and as members of RID; we work closely with Interpreter Training Programs in our state to provide appropriate practicum settings for those students new to the field of interpreting.

Note Takers - Available upon Request:

Deaf and Hard of Hearing students rely upon a variety of visual clues in order to process information correctly, therefore the services of a note taker are utilized in the classroom.

  • Note takers are fellow students who are in the same class as the deaf and hard of hearing student.
  • Note takers are compensated for their services; usually two weeks after the end of the semester.
  • Note takers and the students they are working for are provided with carbonless paper; free of charge.
  • Policies and procedures for note taking services can be found in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Student Services handbook as well as in the Note taker’s handbook.

Assistive Listening Devices and Adaptive Equipment-Limited Availability:

These items are in limited quantity and subject to availability. In addition, there are specific procedures one must abide by in order to receive such devices. Contact the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Coordinator for more details.

Additional Resources or Accommodations:

All deaf and hard of hearing students of Jefferson Community and Technical College are to meet with the program coordinator to document and assess their individual accessibility needs and warranted accommodations. 

Items to consider such as extended time, scheduling interpreters for meeting with tutors, advising, as well as, all activities that are part of a student’s college experience must be made through the DHHSS program coordinator and are based upon a student’s individual need and ADA mandates.

To Receive Accommodations:

  • Contact the office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Student Services (DHHSS) and arrange an appointment to meet with the program coordinator.
  • When you come for your appointment bring either a copy of an audiogram or a physician’s statement that discloses your degree of hearing loss.  Accommodations cannot be granted without appropriate documentation.
  • Complete an Intake interview with the program coordinator.
  • Activate your free student email account, 24-48 hours AFTER you register for classes, and maintain it properly.

All Jefferson’s campuses rely fully upon the KCTC Internet in order to maintain close contact with its students.   Deaf and Hard of Hearing Student Services will use the KCTC Internet system to communicate with the students it serves.
