JCTC Foundation awards $100,000 in Jubilee scholarships

The Jefferson Community and Technical College Foundation awarded $100,000 in scholarships to 27 JCTC students seeking to advance their higher educations. The awards were presented by Foundation Board members and Jubilee volunteers and sponsors in a ceremony on the Downtown Campus on May 14, 2015.

Support for the scholarships came from proceeds from the 2014 Jefferson Jubilee, which is held annually. Scholarships are for tuition for one academic year.

This is one of my favorite occasions of the year, said 2014 event chair Christy Haas. We work on planning and preparing for the Jubilee year-round, but today is where all that effort pays off, when we can award the Jubilee scholarships.

The Jefferson Jubilee also has raised money to support a student emergency fund and tutoring services at the college.

The 2014 event was presented by UPS. The UPS Jubilee Scholarship was awarded to Leroy Holden III of Louisville.

Other event sponsors were Brown-Forman, Elmcroft Senior Living, Ford Motor Co., GE Appliances, IBM, IVS Inc., LabCorp, Lantech, Norton Healthcare, Sysco, US Bank, Universal Woods and US Bank. These sponsors each had scholarships named for them. Other scholarships were awarded from auction and other event proceeds.

The other scholarship recipients were Shannon Allen, Caroline Bashman, Ellie Beller, Kenneth Brown Jr., Molly Carter, Bendan Denkhoff, Jeremiah Dorris, Jessica Edwards, Leah Farris, Kelsey Hall, Carley Hunter, Hnem Kim, Amber Kessinger, Maryam Kosari, Marcus Mager, Ashley McKinney, Stephen Morris, Tara Moseley, Alyssa Noble, Isis Perez-Bello, Sherry Racki, Melissa Reeves, John Rougeux, Desarae Summers, Thomas Russell and Hugo Tran.

The scholarships are critical support for Jefferson students, many of who work at least part-time and support families.

The Jefferson Community and Technical College Foundation supports the college through fund-raising and advocacy efforts. It comprises a volunteer board of community and business leaders.

Jefferson Jubilee 2015, now in its sixth year, is scheduled for Sept. 18, 2015, at 7 p.m. at The Henry Clay in Louisville. For information about tickets and sponsorships visit Jefferson.KCTCS.edu/Giving.
