Accelerating Opportunity Kentucky (AOKY)

Accelerating Opportunity Kentucky (AOKY) is an educational and workforce initiative that combines basic skills education (math, reading and writing) with technical training in order to prepare students for high-demand jobs or to continue on with their educational studies. AOKY a partnership between Jefferson Community & Technical College, KYAE (Kentucky Adult Education), and the Office of Employment & Training is based on the belief that postsecondary credentials are the gateway to family-supporting wages. Students are concurrently enrolled into Adult Education courses and working on a GED while enrolled in credit bearing courses at JCTC.

The goals of AOKY are to:

  • Identify and remove barriers that prevent adults from entering and completing their education.
  • Allow adults to earn stackable credentials that bear academic credit while completing their GED.
  • Work with area businesses to ensure adults are acquiring the skills needed for the workforce.
  • Build sustainable programs so adults receive the education needed to land jobs with family-sustaining wages.
  • Provide personalized attention and support to students as well as offer wrap-around services for academic/non-academic issues

Currently, AOKY offers classes in the following academic areas:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Carpentry
  • Computer and Information Technologies
  • Computerized Manufacturing and Machining
  • Healthcare Foundations
  • Welding

Requirements for AOKY

  • An adult has to be enrolled in Kentucky Adult Education and pursuing a GED.
  • And adult has to pass the Wonderlic Ability to Benefit Test (AtB)
  • Note: Testing is held Ahrens Learning Center (546 S. 1st Street. Call 485-3400 to schedule.)
  • An adult has to complete a Financial Aid application (FAFSA) at http://fafsa.ed.gov. Most students qualify for Federal Pell Grant or Kentucky Work Ready Scholarship

  • Personalized attention and support from JCTC and Adult Ed instructors.
  • Assistance with resume development, job searching, and how to utilize academic/non-academic wrap-around services.
  • A pathway to a better-paying, high-demand job...and a brighter future!
  • In many cases, college classes at little to no cost through Financial Aid or a variety of other funding streams.
