What is Commercial Driver's License?

Jefferson’s CDL training program will prepare students with the skills necessary to obtain their full CDL A license. The class will meet for 40 hours of in class training and 120 hours of range and road training.  Students will test at the conclusion of the class at the state testing center using a Jefferson CDL truck and trailer.

This CDLA program meets all the requirements for ELDT (entry level driver training) as set forth by the FMCSA that began on Feb 7, 2022.

How Do I Pay For This?

  • $5,000 tuition includes DOT physical, drug screen, CDL manual, classroom and road training.
  • Tuition does not include the following student fees to the circuit clerk’s office: CDL application $24, permit $11, skills testing $50, original CDL $40 (total $125).
  • Tuition to be paid in full before the first day of class.
  • Acceptable payment methods: cash, credit card, bank check, or student loan.
  • There are opportunities for sponsorship through trucking companies. 
  • Federal Financial Aid Grants and loans will NOT pay for this program. The Work Ready Scholarship will sometimes pay $1,092 and students are responsible for the balance of $3,908. Contact Work Ready by emailing to ask for more information.
  • Veterans’ benefits will usually pay some or all the fees for this course. If you are a veteran, please contact to inquire about the GI benefits process.
  • Funding may be available through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). To see if funding for CDL is available in your county and if you qualify, contact

How do I apply?

CDL training program applicants must meet the following requirements before being admitted into the program:

  • Read and write the English language fluently.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Meet the Federal DOT physical requirements, including a drug screen.
  • Have a valid driver's license at the time of registration.
  • Attempt to obtain the learner’s permit before class starts.
