From new mom to new beginnings: Jefferson student proves its never too late

As we celebrate National Scholarship Month, we're #JeffersonProud to highlight students like Tangalita Jackson, whose journey can inspire us all.

When Tangalita became a new mom at 41, it birthed a desire to return to the classroom. After earning her GED, she came to Jefferson with a clear purpose: to show her daughter that education can open doors.

“I really want her to be smart through me, not just through school. I want to be able to come home and teach her things, too,” she said.

Juggling classes and life as a single mom while working in Jefferson’s Ready to Work office hasn’t been easy, but Tangalita has thrived in her first semester. Her determination paid off when she earned the Kentucky Colonels Better Life Scholarship, giving her much-needed support during a tough financial season.

“The scholarship really helped my situation, and at the right time," Tangalita said.

This Thanksgiving week, as we reflect on gratitude, she says she’s especially thankful for the opportunities she has found at Jefferson and the resources that make education possible for all students.

“It's never too late to go back to school. It's never too late to be a mom. There are resources that can help you navigate through anything. Don't be afraid to get out there and try something new or try again.”

Tangalita is pursuing a degree in Human Services with a goal to work with children.
