Jefferson Hosts Grand Opening of its Center for Science and Discovery

Published on Jan 21, 2026

On Jan. 21, Jefferson cut the ribbon and officially opened the doors of its Center for Science and Discovery, a modern, state-of-the-art 40,000 square foot STEM facility, with cutting-edge labs and classrooms. Located at 640 S. First St., the Center is housed in the heart of Jefferson’s Downtown Campus.

“This center represents our commitment to innovation, workforce readiness, student success and the need for a quality science education in today’s working environment,” Jefferson President Ty Handy said. “Even if one isn’t directly working in a scientific field, the logical thought processes that are learned in science education translate to many different fields and many forms of decision making.”

The Center for Science and Discovery is part of Jefferson Rising, a transformative revitalization project of Jefferson’s downtown Louisville campus that will elevate student experiences while serving as the catalyst for future redevelopment. When complete, the $90 million, multi-year project will create a dynamic campus with more areas for students and staff to gather, study and relax.

Additionally, Jefferson announced the public phase of the $9.5 million Jefferson Rising campaign where the community has joined the College and the state in recognizing the value of this investment for the education of our community’s students.

With a public phase goal of $9.5 million, the College’s Foundation has already raised $8.5 million toward the campaign. This last phase of the campaign will involve opportunities for the naming of classrooms, labs and other spaces by organizations and individuals who see the value of this educational experience for Louisville’s students.
