The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at JCTC is the largest in Kentucky.
It is developmental in nature, and it is designed for students who want to improve
their English skills for academic, professional, and personal success.
Jefferson does not offer an ESL credential, just a certificate of completion. All ESL classes are developmental and cannot be transferred. They are required at JCTC before enrolling in college-level courses.
ESL courses prepare students for college-level courses and for academic and technical
programs at Jefferson. ESL courses also prepare students to transfer to other schools.
ESL courses are not free. The ESL courses are three to four credit classes and have the same tuition rate
(cost per credit hour) as any other college-level courses. Students can apply for
financial aid, but that doesn’t mean the classes are free. For the most up to date
information regarding our annual tuition and fees, visit JCTC Tuition & Costs.
If students only plan to take ESL courses and do not wish to continue into a college
level program, they will need to apply as a non-degree student. Attending in non-degree
status will prevent a student from being eligible for any federal financial aid.
For more information about program levels/pathways, admissions, enrollment, and department contacts, visit ESL Program Overview.
Students seeking an F-1 International Student Visa should visit the F-1 Student Admissions page. Please note that Jefferson Community & Technical College requires English proficiency in order to issue an I-20 for the F-1 Visa.
