F-1 Admissions Process

The admissions process for an F-1 student depends on previous educational experience. Please refer to the section below that matches your experience to determine the steps to begin the F-1 application process.

To get started, you'll need: 

  • An email address that we can use to contact you.
  • Name and address of the high school you have attended.
  • Name and address of any colleges you have attended.

To begin the process of applying for an F-1 visa, you will need to submit the following documents to jf.international@kctcs.edu

  • Passport Biographic page
  • English proficiency scores 
    • If English is not your primary language spoken in your home and during all years of your education, submit proof of English proficiency.
      • JCTC can not give the I-20 Form to students who do not have an English Proficiency document.
    • Proof of your English skills may be any of the following:
      • TOEFL: The minimum score for admission is 61 on the iBT or 500 on the PBT. Test scores must be sent directly to Jefferson Community and Technical College by the testing service.
        Jefferson's school code for the TOEFL is 1328.
      • IELTS: A minimum score of 6.0
      • Duolingo English Test (DET): A minimum score of 95.
      • Pearson Test of English (PTE): A minimum score of 50.
      • ESL Michigan Test: (This option is currently only available in Louisville; the test is available on campus) A minimum score 50.
      • Language Training Programs:
        • Completion of the advanced level of an Intensive English Program at U.S. institution inside the country.
        • College English 101 and 102: Completion of College English 101 and 102, or its equivalent, with a minimum grade of B.
  • Copy of I-94
    • Only required for first time students that are currently in the United States and applying for change of status.
  • Financial Readiness Forms & 3 months of bank statements 
  • Application for Form I-20

Submitting International High School Transcripts

If you attended a school with a primary language other than English, we require an official general translation of the transcript as well as the original document to be submitted from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member. Documents may be accepted in the following formats:

  • Mailed directly from the evaluation service to Jefferson to the mailing address below:
    • Jefferson Community & Technical College 
      ATTN:Admissions 
      109 E. Broadway  
      Louisville, KY 40202
    • Hand-delivered in person  in an unopened envelope with a valid government issued photo ID.

If from a school with English as the primary language, we require a copy of the final transcript with graduation date and may be accepted in the following formats: 

  • Mailed directly from the to Jefferson with a copy of the front and back of a valid government issued photo ID to mailing address above.
  • Hand-delivered with an official government issued photo ID. 
  • Via email to jefferson-admissions@kctcs.edu with a copy of the front and back of a valid government issued photo ID and student ID number.
    This is the only type of transcript document that is accepted via email from a student.

Submitting International College Transcripts

We will need a course-by-course (line-by-line) transcript evaluation from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member for any international college coursework. Please have your evaluation completed by one of the agencies listed on this website.

You can send transcripts one of the following ways:

  • Hand-deliver to any of our campuses in a signed and sealed envelope from the school(s).
Once you arrive in the U.S., you will need to complete our free placement testing before enrollment. You can visit our Testing Center Sign-Up for more information.

  • Completed Transfer Report form

Regionally Accredited College in the U.S.

You can order your transcripts online or ask your college’s records office to send them to us. If you are still currently enrolled in classes, you can send an official work-in-progress transcript. Once you complete your courses, you will need to send in a final transcript before being able to enroll in future courses. They can be sent in the following formats:

  • Submitted electronically (faxes and email attachments are not accepted) through a secure, password-protected site (i.e. National Student Clearinghouse or Parchment) 
  • Mailed directly from the previous college to the mailing address below:

  • Hand-delivered in the original, signed and sealed envelope, please note print date must be within the last 6 months (if opened by the student, the transcript is unofficial).

College Outside of the U.S.

If you have also attended any international colleges, we will need a course-by-course (line-by-line) transcript evaluation from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member. Please have your evaluation completed by one of the agencies listed on this website.

Once your college transcripts have been received, we will notify you of any required placement testing.

Student Health Insurance Requirement

The U.S. Department of State requires all F-1, international students to maintain full health insurance coverage while studying in the United States.

Healthcare in the U.S. is high-quality but very expensive. To ensure students are protected, your health insurance must provide:

  • At least $200,000 in coverage per illness or injury
  • Repatriation of remains (coverage for the return of your body to your home country in the event of death).
