Frequently Asked Questions
Academic Requirement Report Tutorial*
*Access to this video requires students to log in using their KCTCS account.
Full-Time Enrollment: A full-time student is enrolled in 12 or more credit hours in a semester. A part-time student is enrolled in less than 12 credit hours in a semester. When determining how many hours one should take in a semester.
In most cases 6 credits is the minimum to be eligible for classes to be financial aid eligible. You should carefully consider your time (work, family, etc.) when planning how many classes to take.
There are a few program partners with Jefferson/KCTCS that will require a specific number of credit hours per semester for participants to maintain eligibility. These is not a Federal Financial Aid requirements.
- Programs that require students to be enrolled in 12 credits: Family Scholar house (residential program) and F1 Visa students.
- The Evolve 502 scholarship requires 9 credits hours minimum per semester.
Current and Good Standing Returning Student can self-enroll by using their Student Self-Service or Visual Schedule Building. Both can be accessing though your MyPath account. Be sure to select courses offered through Jefferson (in-person or online) to ensure you meet the residency requirements for graduation/credentialing.
New first-time students and students returning from Academic Suspension are not able to self-enroll for their first semester.
It is highly recommended that contact your advisor before changing your major as this may impact Federal Financial Aid eligibility and appropriate course selections.
For students who are pursue a selective admission program, such as Nursing, Aviation Technology, or other Allied Health programs they can only be added to those majors once officially accepted into the specific program. Student should talk with their advisor to determine the best major(s) to pursue while allowing them to complete the necessary pre-requisite to be able to officially apply for those programs.

What’s the difference between dropping and withdrawing from a course?
To drop a course, you must do so by a certain day within the semester. You will need to check the academic calendar by semester for the specific drop date by term (ex. Drop date for a 16-week class is different than the drop date timeframe for an 8-week course).
Withdrawing from a course has a larger window of time to request. It is highly recommended to talk with your Advisor and/or the Financial Aid Office before submitting a request to withdraw for a course(s), due to potential academic and/or financial consequences. Withdrawals should not be taken lightly and only requested if necessary.
