Student Rights Under Title IX

KCTCS, which includes JCTC, has zero tolerance for illegal discrimination of any kind. Any student who thinks they may have been discriminated against or subjected to harassment by students or employees because of their race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, beliefs, political affiliation, veteran status, age, or disability (including denial of a request for an accommodation), has the right to pursue an informal and/or formal discrimination grievance.   • Learning Commons: The Learning Commons offers library and tutoring services. Ask a Librarian service and library resources (articles, eBooks, streaming video, and guides) are available online. Print library collections are available at the Downtown and Southwest Campuses. You can meet with a tutor in person or online for help with course content, writing, research, reading, study skills, and basic computer skills.

Cheating, Plagiarism, and Academic Dishonesty

As per the Student Code of Conduct, incidents of academic dishonesty and misconduct which occur within the context of a specific course are resolved by the academic department in accordance with the College academic honesty policy. In such a case, the instructor or academic department determines whether academic dishonesty or misconduct occurred, and if so, the appropriate academic penalty.

Sanctions for a finding of academic dishonesty or misconduct include but are not limited to:

  • Requiring the student to resubmit the assignment
  • A lower grade on the assignment or in the course
  • A zero for the assignment or exam
  • A failing grade in the course
  • Removal from the course
  • Referral for disciplinary actions beyond the above sanctions

All academic misconduct actions must be reported to the chief academic officer for record-keeping purposes. Students may appeal the fact of their guilt of the severity of the sanction to the College Appeals Board, which will make a recommendation to the college president, who is ultimately responsible for the decision.  The student has no further appeal rights except in cases of suspension or expulsion.

AI Policy

Students are expected to familiarize themselves with and adhere to the AI policy outlined by their instructors. Please consult your instructor’s policy for detailed expectations and guidelines.

Procedure for Class Recordings

Class periods associated with this course may be recorded by the Instructor. Students are hereby notified that the content of the recordings may, at times, include their faces and voices. Continued participation in this course establishes consent to be recorded. Recordings may be posted by the Instructor so that they are only accessible to the students in this course. If the Instructor intends to release or post these recordings for other sections of this course or for any other purposes, the Instructor will notify students heard or seen in the recordings and will ask for written permission. Students are advised that the written permission, if granted, will be retained in their student records. If students in this class have any questions regarding these recordings or the form they may be asked to sign, students should talk with the Instructor.

Inclement Weather & Emergencies

When severe weather or other emergency situations prevent face-to-face and hybrid classes from meeting in person, Jefferson will operate in a “Remote Work and Learn” format. Online classes will continue as normal, and students in hybrid or face-to-face classes should watch for specific communication from instructors.

If the campus is operating on a delayed opening please watch for specific communications from your instructors.

Statement of Flexibility

The College must remain flexible to meet challenges that may include epidemics, pandemics, natural disasters, human-influenced disasters, and any and all threats to the College campus, students, employees, and surrounding communities. To ensure the safety and well-being of our constituencies, the College maintains the right to move classes temporarily or permanently to online, remote platforms; to a hybrid section that includes some face-to-face learning and some remote learning; or to a different campus, location, building, or time. Additionally, the College reserves the right to institute plans or practices in the physical classroom/lab/activity spaces and common areas to protect students and faculty. The College will attempt to make these changes as minimally disruptive as possible, but the College reserves the sole right to alter the particular type, place, or time for their classes.
