Federal Direct Loan Step-by-Step Instructions
Once your aid is complete, Jefferson will place your eligible loan amount on your account. Remember, you must be enrolled in at least six (6) program applicable credit hours to receive a student loan.
You must then do the following three (3) steps:
- Accept/reduce/decline the loans through your self-service.
- You must complete a Master Promissory Note online.
- You must complete Entrance Loan Counseling online.
You may electronically sign the MPN using your FSA ID. This is the same FSAID used to sign your FAFSA electronically. If misplaced, you may register for a new FSA ID.
Maximum Annual Loan Limits for Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loans
1st Year Freshman Level [July 1st through June 30th]
- Dependent Undergraduate: $5,500-- No more than $3,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
- Independent Undergraduate: $9,500 No more than $3,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
2nd Year Sophomore Level [July 1st through June 30th]
- Dependent Undergraduate: $6,500 No more than $4,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
- Independent Undergraduate: $10,500 No more than $4,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
Maximum Total Debt from Federal Direct Loans When You Graduate [Lifetime limit as Undergraduate]
- Dependent Undergraduate: $31,000 No more than $23,000 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
- Independent Undergraduate: $57,500 No more than $23,000 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.
