Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)
Dependent students (those who had to provide parental data on the FAFSA) may have another loan resource to use called the Federal Parent PLUS loan program.
A parent of a dependent undergraduate student may apply for a Parent PLUS loan to help pay their student's educational costs.
The interest rate for these Direct PLUS loans is fixed at 7.08%. Interest is charged on a PLUS Loan from the date of the first disbursement until the loan is paid in full.
To apply, complete the Parent PLUS Loan Application at the Student Aid website.
- Typically the parent begins repaying principle and interest 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed unless the lender offers a deferment option for the parent.
-
Before we can receive funds from the Direct Parent PLUS Loan, a parent must complete a Direct PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN).
-
If the parent wants to receive the refund (as opposed to the student receiving the refund) they must select a refund preference. This question/option is noted on the PLUS Application in COD.
-
If a parent is denied (which is usually due to adverse credit), a student can borrow as an independent student from the un-subsidized loan program.
